The Supreme Court today adjourned hearing on a batch ofpetitions–including one of Kashmir-based Editor Anuradha Basin and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad–challenging Kashmir’s communication shut downtill tomorrow at the request of the Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta.
The Court had earlier rebuked Mehta for ”not giving enoughattention’’ to the case at hand and even asked the Jammu & Kashmir administration, to respond to all the contentions raised by the petitioners onthe restrictions imposed following the abrogation of Article 370.
The bench presided by NV Ramana and comprising Justices RSubhash Reddy and BR Gavai told Mehta, who appeared on behalf of the stateadministration, that the several petitioners who had challenged the manyrestrictions put up by the government in the region, have already argued theircase in detail. So he also needs to be equally prepared to come up with adetailed response to contest the claims of petitioners.
The bench coming down harshly on Mehta said you have toanswer each and every question raised by the petitioners who had argued theircase in detail.
“Yourcounter-affidavit does not help us to come to any conclusion. Don’t give theimpression that you are not giving enough attention to the case,” said thebench. Mehta said most of the averments made by the petitioners on restrictionsare “incorrect” and he will respond to each and every aspect when he argues incourt, agencies reported.
